Travel Diary: Lisbon - The City With The Perfect View

Updated: Mar 20, 2018

Nossa Senhora do Monte Viewpoint

I've recently travelled to Lisbon to visit my family, and as always I took the chance to walk those beautiful streets that hold so many good memories. If you know me or read the About me section you know that I grew up in Lisbon, so supposedly I shouldn't be so happy or excited everytime I go there, but if you have ever travelled to this city you probably understand why I feel this immense love for it.

Besides having the best food I've ever ate, Lisbon has also very beautiful views.

This time around I took the chance to go to some of my favorite viewpoints (called miradouros in portuguese), and decided to share them with you, as well as some pictures from the streets I like.

The viewpoint pictured above is my favorite one, it's located in an area called Graça and it has, in my opinion the best panoramic view of Lisbon downtown, it's in front of a chapel with the same name Nossa Senhora do Monte (which translated means Our Lady of the Hill), it has a small garden and a few chairs. From here you get to see the river, the bridge 25 de Abril and most of downtown. It's a great place to watch the sunset with some friends or your loved one, it's a pretty romantic spot in my opinion. To get there you have several options, you can walk if you are already downtown, from Rossio or Martin Moniz, it's a long walk uphill but worth it cause you will get to see all of the little shops, buildings and cute streets on the way. Or if you don't enjoy walking you can catch the well known tram 28 in Martim Moniz, which it's usually a really cool experience except during summer when it's packed!

Close to Nossa Senhora do Monte, there is another viewpoint called Miradouro da Graça it's quite nice too, it has a kiosk were you can buy beverages and sandwiches and it has also some tables and chairs around it. These two viewpoints are very close to one another so you can "easily" walk between them.

There are other viewpoints in Lisbon that I love but these two ate my favorite ones.

Besides the viewpoints I also enjoy strolling through Rua Augusta, where there is a variety of shops and restaurants on both sides of the street, this street leads right into a square called Praça do Comércio, and right in front of it you have the river Tejo. Before reaching the square you have an Arc called Arco da Rua Augusta, that is also a very nice viewpoint, the entrance is hidden on the left side of the Arc and the best part is that it's not expensive at all, you pay a token price for a good view.

Another zone I like is Chiado that leads to my favorite area, Bairro Alto.

Bairro Alto is a residential area with a very active nightlife, there are a lot of hostels, bars, shops and restaurants there. It's such a lively place full of good energy and I go there whenever I visit Lisbon, it's literally my feel good place.

My favorite zone in Lisbon is definitely the downtown area, but I guarantee you there is a lot to see and do over there. This is just what I managed to see in the 3 days I spent there. When I get the chance I will take more pictures and write a more detailed post so you can see just how beautiful my city is.

Have you ever been there? What did you think of it?
